“The debate about the future of Europe reached now a crucial stage. European institutions, member states and politicians focus increasingly on economic, financial and monetary issues bearing, no doubt, major importance.
Nevertheless, together with my fellow citizens from Eastern Europe, I find myself asking: What it will look like, the post-crisis Europe? Are macroeconomic indicators more important than fundamental values? Is it acceptable to slightly disregard the rule of law if one achieves a balanced budget?
We, eastern Europeans, lived the fall of the Iron Curtain and rushed immediately towards a European Union of values. We were eager to reunite with those not forced by history to learn the totalitarian experience. We are now worried that post-crisis Europe could downgrade the universal values of human dignity, liberty, equality and solidarity.
Macroeconomic indicators shall never substitute the European values!”
