In the midst of\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>crisis caused by the pandemic, the EU’s priority is people’s lives and\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span>health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In order to achieve results,\u00a0however,<\/span>\u00a0European solidarity and joint action\u00a0must be found<\/span>\u00a0in the face of\u00a0this\u00a0<\/span>danger,\u00a0stressed<\/span>\u00a0MEP Iuliu Winkler (RMDSZ<\/span>,\u00a0EPP<\/span>) in the explanation\u00a0of vote<\/span>\u00a0on the approval of\u00a0emergency\u00a0<\/span>financial measures\u00a0under the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative<\/span>. Iuliu Winkler also points out\u00a0that the first urgency is to fight the pandemic<\/span>, to strengthen public health systems and to coordinate\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>cooperation of European<\/span>\u00a0healthcare<\/span>\u00a0systems. \u201cNothing is more precious than people’s lives and\u00a0their<\/span>\u00a0health. But we need to make it clear that saving economies is just as urgent. We are already overwhelmed by the rapid evolution of the economic crisis. Therefore, all challenges must be faced simultaneously. We must now design public policies that will relaunch the EU after the pandemic. In this effort, the EP must fully manifest its initiative\u201d, stated the RMDSZ MEP<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Winkler considers it extremely important for the EP to adopt the initiative by which Member States will have access to \u20ac37 billion to support citizens, businesses and healthcare<\/span>\u00a0systems. He\u00a0further\u00a0<\/span>stressed<\/span>\u00a0that the other two decisions of the\u00a0Parliament<\/span>\u00a0related to the crisis,\u00a0<\/span>in the field of air transport and the EUR 800 million increase of the EU Solidarity Fund,<\/span>\u00a0are equally important. “All these decisions are necessary, but insufficient. The first EU crisis measures were uncoordinated, showing that the European institutions were unprepared and that the information needed for an immediate response was not available. In recent days, we have witnessed contradictory, even chaotic, decisions made by Member States. European solidarity has completely evaporated”,\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span>\u00a0Winkler.<\/p>\n

He expressed his<\/span>\u00a0hope that all this would change fundamentally and immediately. “I hope that the European Parliament, which organized a plenary session under the most difficult logistical conditions, ensuring the possibility of an overwhelming majority of MEPs to vote from a distance, will succeed, starting\u00a0already<\/span>\u00a0tomorrow, to\u00a0bring back to reality<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0urgent necessity<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0European\u00a0<\/span>solidarity and joint action.<\/span>\u00a0The pandemic generated a public health crisis, but also economic and social crises<\/span>. Citizens’ lives are endangered in all Member States, European economies will enter into severe recession, and social problems will escalate. The perpetuation of the discord puts<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>us in<\/span>\u00a0danger of\u00a0seeing a\u00a0<\/span>break–<\/span>down\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>the European\u00a0project<\/span>. That is why the EU’s response to the crisis must be a primarily political one<\/span>. European solidarity and joint action\u00a0in the face of\u00a0<\/span>dangers\u00a0ought to<\/span>\u00a0be found, urgently<\/span>. I strongly believe that the prioritary scope<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>emergency actions should be\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>people,\u00a0their<\/span>\u00a0families and\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span>jobs. These are the priorities that the RMDSZ\u00a0<\/span>promotes. Solutions to combat\u00a0these\u00a0<\/span>multiple crises need to be formulated at European level, but they must be implemented at the level of the regions\u00a0in a way that the final<\/span>\u00a0beneficiaries of the European action are the people\u201d,\u00a0added<\/span>\u00a0Winkler in his\u00a0explanation\u00a0of vote<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Through the measures taken by the European Commission\u00a0(EC)\u00a0<\/span>and approved by the European Parliament, Romania has\u00a0immediately available<\/span>\u00a0financial resources of over\u00a0\u20ac<\/span>500 million and another\u00a0\u20ac<\/span>637 million from April 2020. The total amount of\u00a0<\/span>resources\u00a0at the disposal\u00a0<\/span>of our country\u00a0adds up<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0\u20ac<\/span>3 billion out of the\u00a0\u20ac<\/span>37 billion mobilized by the Commission. These resources do not represent “fresh money”, but\u00a0rather\u00a0<\/span>existing funding from cohesion funds, redistributed by the EC for action against the COVID-19<\/span>\u00a0pandemic.<\/p>\n
